3.        President’s Report

The year from August 2006 to August 2007 was an enjoyable and constructive one for ISST. I felt very well as your president, especially because I have a really cooperative Board and a wonderfully kind and patient secretary at my side. I thank you all very much for your work, for your always thoughtful and prompt collaboration, for your support and for your precious friendship

At the Board meeting in Holland we welcomed Maria Ellen Chiaia as our new treasurer and Judy Zappacosta as the second representative from STA. The whole atmosphere during the meeting was relaxed and constructive, and  the delightful “pick nick on sand” added much pleasure and fun, although at the end we all got wet in a heavenly shower.

Professionally, among lots of other issues, we added the Rules of procedure to the ISST statutes, which was an important step forward towards order and clarity within our organization.

After the board meeting followed the 5 days ITW (Intensive Training Week). It was a premiere, but turned out as a full success! 34 participants from all over the world attended the training. We had not one serious complaint, and even a little profit of good 2000.- CHF resulted for ISST.

Our society is growing in regard to the number of members and in its reputation. A proof for ISST’s increasing reputation is on the one hand the growing international interest in Sandplay Therapy  and in the status of ISST membership and on the other hand the letter from the president of IAAP, Christian Gaillard, in which  IAAP welcomes ISST as an Allied Society, hoping and wishing good cooperation of the two societies. The acceptance of Sandplay Therapy as practiced by ISST by the International Jungian Association  is a success for us and most helpful for our reputation.

This letter came to me “out of the blue”, I did not even know that the IAAP has Allied Associations, but in retrospection I believe the decision of the IAAP executive committee was the result of  some very important discussions I had with members of the IAAP Board in China.  There I strongly defended the high professional standards of ISST and voted for cooperation between training groups of Sandplay Therapy and training groups of Analytical Psychology, especially where both societies are in development.

However the growing reputation of ISST in the international professional world is not only exiting, but also a commitment, a commitment to hold up the high standards of training

In September 2006, as already mentioned, I visited again China and attended the International Scientific Conference of Analytical Psychology in Guangzhou. At the pre conference I gave two long Sandplay seminars  At this occasion I openly addressed the problem of mass teaching. Yes, it’s wonderful we might think, a hall occupied to the last seat, but although I could not change the situation, I strongly felt: No! This enormous interest nourishes our feeling of being wanted, of grandiosity, of the power of Sandplay, but it ruins the quality of training, the high professional standards of ISST. After China I attended the 20est Conference of JAST, the Japanese Sandplay Society. Also in Japan the interest in Sandplay is overwhelmingly wide. At this occasion I met a group of interested women from South Korea. This was my first contact with Korea.
From Japan I flew to Australia.
I was teaching in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Also in Australia there is an enormous interest in Sandplay. However there we find the special situation, that in Sydney the “Australian and New Zealand Society of Jungian Analysts”, called ANZSJA, organized this first Sandplay
Conference in Sydney, and stimulated by it’s huge success, now want to go on with a “high standard” Sandplay training on the base of Jungian psychology.

In February I had a group of 10 South Korean students with their professor and a translator. They came for a 5 days course in Sandplay to Switzerland.

In March I visited for the 5th time Brazil. In Brazil there are mostly Jungian Analysts working with Sandplay. At this very moment we will most probably welcome the first ISST member from Brazil.(indeed we do, Sept.3.07).  Others will follow, they are near to the goal of a Brazilian National Sandplay group.

I also went to the beach near São Paulo to explore places for the ITW 2008. You will hear more of it later.

Last but not least there are news from France. As you know, our only French member Laurence Verley passed away some years ago. But she trained students, among others some French Jungian Analysts. So there is a revival in France.

And again last but not least there will be a cooperation of ISST with the C.G.Jung Institute Zürich. After so many years of  subtile reservations against Sandplaywe now can organize for June 2008 a five days course in Sandplay and Analytical Psychology for our students and for trainees of ISST. The profit will be split. (See events)

11.       Admission of  a new ISST National Society ISTA in Israel
The Israeli Sandplay Therapists Association- I.S.T.A.  had submitted an application for admission as an ISST National Society. Following this request a second application for admission was received from the League of Israeli Sandplay Therapists. L.I.S.T.  The Board had discussed both requests thoroughly and decided to table both applications. It was the opinion of the Board that only one National Society should be established in Israel.. The Board had decided to write a letter to the two applicants and all ISST members in Israel explaining why the business had to be tabled. It is hoped that the I.S.T.A. and the L.I.S.T. will be able to develop one proposal for admission as the ISST would welcome a National Society in Israel.

12.       Approval of the Code of Ethics
The authors of the new Code of Ethics are Rie Roger Mitchell and Maggie Baron and the President thanked them for their excellent work.
The Code includes the Purpose and Goals of the ISST, the Purpose of the Code as well as seven sections on Professional Responsibilities, Confidentiality, Relationships with Clients, Professional Conduct, the Resolving of Ethical Issue, Ground for Expulsion from ISST and Procedures for Possible Expulsion. Members will receive it as an attachment.
The new Code of Ethics can be visited soon on the ISST website www.isst-society.com and will be translated into German and Italian.

14.       Information

-Letter from Christian Gaillard, President of IAAP. The ISST has been invited to be an allied society of the International Association for Analytical Psychology and the ISST President has already thanked Prof. Gaillard for the appreciated gesture.

-Intensive Training week ITW 2008
This training week is thought for candidates who live in countries with no national societies. The next one will take place in Brazil, in a small place on the sea down São Paulo and the dates will be ca. 17-23 August 2008. In Brazil there are many interested candidates who have  no possibility to travel abroad. Beforehand the Board will have its usual meeting on 15-16.8.
Name of the hotel: Juqueyha Praia, São Sebastião, www.juquehypraia.com.br

- Congress 2009. Prof. Higuchi-san, the President of the Japanese ISST Society, has extended his invitation to organize the congress in Kyoto and would welcome members in his country. We are very glad and thankful for his kind invitation and have accepted it with pleasure. The presumed date will be the second half of September because the month of August is very hot there.

Again the question of simultaneous translation has arisen. The Board has discussed seriously this point  in order to find the best possibilities for offering translations at the next congress.

End of the meeting: 7pm.                          Recording secretary: Yvonne Trueb

AISPT Associazione Italiana per la Sandplay Therapy – www.aispt.it
by Wilma Bosio Blotto

The Italian Association of “Sandplay Therapy” consists of 35 regular members (9 senior teaching members plus 3 new teaching members) that officially meet twice a year during the final public seminars of the new members. The AISPT manages the 4 year school of psychotherapy, which is based in Rome, and two Master degree courses (one in Milan and one in Rome).
The school has been approved by the Ministry of Public Education to train psychotherapists. Access to the school is given to psychologists and doctors that have endured a personal analysis of at least 200 hours with a certified analyst, and have passed an entry interview.
The trainees should go to a personal Sandplay process during the school courses, if they have not done so before. The training is divided into 2 terms, each consisting in two years with a total of 500 hours each (which include theory and practice). The first called “introductory”, ends with a written paper; the second is called “formative” and ends instead with a clinical paper on a case treated with Sandplay therapy. As of now there are 9 students in the introductory term and 2 in the formative term.
The masters. Access to the masters is granted to psychotherapists that have completed their training in centers approved by the Italian Ministry of Public Education, and that have endured a personal analysis with a certified analyst. During the two year masters course, those who are admitted have to do a Sandplay therapy with AISPT members and 70 hours of individual supervision.Whilst the master done in Rome ended with ten pupils, two of which have already become members of the AISPT, the masters degree done in Milan has completed its first year. The students in Milan were a total of sixteen, all psychotherapists (psychologists and doctors). Half of these work for public institutions and half are freelance. Some teachers were university professors with interest in Sandplay therapy and the others were teaching members of AISPT and one of ISST. Of the two years the first is more theoretical, whilst the second is based more on supervision and they both consist of eight days of full immersion, done each year. In conclusion, if the current students complete their training and become members of the AISPT, such association will double in the near future.

The Association does not only meet officially but its members also meet spontaneously according to their geographical placement. In Rome for example there is a case study group that has members of the AIPA, AISPT, CIPA under the supervision of Andreina Navone, that meet once a month for about five hours. In Milan and Turin, 15 members  of the AISPT (many of these teachers) meet every two months always to discuss practical cases, for about five hours. In the public field the thirty year activity of the “Bambino Gesù” hospital has to be remembered which has been a real forge for Sandplay therapists. In this hospital institution all staff therapists have had a training in Sandplay therapy and such a background is considered an important factor in getting the job. Last but not least we must remember the introduction of Sandplay therapy in two ASL (Azienda Sanitaria Locale, which is the base unit of general medicine in the Italian health system), one in Rome (Doctor Loreti) and one in Turin. These support the already existing centers, and their work is helping to introduce Sandplay therapy on a wider and more qualified scale. Going a little more into detail, last year we organized in Rome the ISST congress that registered a good participation and was a good opportunity to exchange experiences and projects. Also some of our colleagues, among which Doctor A. Navone and Doctor A. Mazzarella were invited to give lectures abroad. Last but not least in March 2006 an “Images laboratory group” called “LAI” that has developed around P. Aite (all Lai members are also members of the IAAP), and that practises Sandplay, has organized a public meeting to discuss certain topics of Sandplay with F. Montecchi, R. Hammann.
We hope that this will be the beginning of a profound exchange that will continue in time.

BISS – British and Irish Sandplay Society
by Alex Esterhuyzen

We are pleased to announce that we now have a Web Site: www.sandplay.org.uk
t carries information about our society, members, events and training. Please visit it.

Membership
BISS currently has 13 ISST members. One qualified in the last year.

Training
Two two year cycles of BISS theoretical training have been completed at Southwell House, London NW3. It marks four successful years of Sandplay training given and administered by the Executive of BISS.

Since the course began in September 2002 18 students have attended the BISS training course. 8 students completed the first two-year cycle of the formal training (2004-2005) and 12 completed the 2005-2006 cycle. 5 joined the cycle part of the way through and will need further hours. A good number of appropriate applications have been received for the next cycle. However, the  executive decided that, due to the ISST conference and the need to thoroughly review the theoretical training, the one day a month cycle of training would be suspended. Instead three weekends of training were provided. There has also been a drive to help support the completion of training for students who have completed the theoretical component, and associates who only need to complete their ISST cases. BISS receives numerous queries about the training programme but most of those inquiring have not completed a Sandplay process with an ISST member which is a necessary requirement before acceptance. Scarcity of ISST members together with their geographical locations means that it can often prove difficult to fulfil this requirement. This reinforces our determination to help more students qualify.

BISS national conference
The BISS national conference took place in June. It was a relatively small conference of 47 people. Readers will be aware that our previous conference made such an impression that it was written up for the American Sandplay Journal by one of the participants. This is because of the attention we give to ambience, theme, and opportunities to actively reflect on oneself and on Sandplay practice through creative participation. This year the theme was: Waking and Dreaming: Rhythms of the life cycle as played out in Sandplay
. Once again, in 2006 attendees came from as far and wide as Israel, New Zealand, Ireland, and the USA, Russia and Japan. It was a resounding success leaving participants feeling renewed in work and community.

BISS Executive Committee
In the past year there have been a number of changes in the BISS executive which continue to challenge our manpower and capacity to pursue some of our objectives.

David Clemens has found it difficult to attend do to work commitments. With the loss of Robby Ginsborg (to pursue teaching in IGAP) and Francis Smith (who moved to Spain) the BISS committee has been seriously stretched in terms of manpower. Sue Chapman has taken up post of Treasurer and Student Registrar and contributed a huge amount of work with much energy. Kate Loiseau continues as Representative for Associate BISS members and Senior Trainees (Advanced candidates for BISS/ISST). She is a fruitful source of ideas and is galvanising senior students and Associates towards completing their training towards full membership.

Future Focus
We intend to continue to provide a forum for the development of members of BISS and to outreach into the broader community in order to increase the profile of Sandplay Therapy as practised in the context of BISS and ISST membership. This outreach would include other Sandplayers (who are not currently part of BISS) as well as other professional societies which may be interested in Sandplay. The highlight of our focus for the next year will be to provide an unusual and fulfilling experience for participants in the ISST International conference in Cambridge in 2007. The theme is:”To see the world in a grain of sand” (a quote from William Blake); Collective and Cultural Influences on the Ecology of Psyche in Sandplay”.
We also hope to explore the possibility of “master classes” for full BISS members to continue their professional development.

CAST – Canadian Association for Sandplay Therapy – www.sandplay.ca
by Joan Nemeth

Membership
CAST/ACTJS currently has 27 highly motivated members, many of whom are at the stage of achieving Advanced Student status.
We continue to have ten ISST members and of these seven are teaching members.
This enables us to extend our training services throughout Canada for future Sandplay Therapy practitioners.

Board
We are currently holding elections to fill three vacancies on our ten-member Board. Under the leadership of our new president, Maria Iosue, Board members are engaged in several issues:
-establishment of new election procedures to allow nation-wide participation in the nomination and election process;
-review of our By-laws related to the operation of the Board and to the psychotherapy legislation (which has passed in the Ontario legislature);
-membership in two Ontario organizations which are actively influencing the application of the psychotherapy legislation: the Ontario Coalition of Mental Health Professions and the Alliance for Psychotherapy Training Institutes;
-plans to send representatives to a Conference on Psychotherapy Training
, planned for 2008, to bring together educators in psychotherapy in order to consider how best to provide training for the newly recognized profession of psychotherapy in Ontario.

Teaching Members
We are holding regularly scheduled meetings to discuss various topics such as:
-Regulation of the practice of psychotherapy in Ontario, Québec and British Columbia:
implications for our training programs and By-laws;
-Consideration of a potential new membership category similar to STA’s Sandplay Practitioner.

Meetings and Conferences
Our National organization continues to provide events and training.
- A ‘Fall gathering’ will include presentations, creative activities and our AMG.
- Our training program is now being offered in several provinces. In the province of Alberta a group of Registered Clinical Psychologists and Clinical Psychology Ph.D. students have begun the full training program. This training program is being sponsored by the Lousage Institute, which offers many professional training programs and is affiliated with the University of Alberta. Our program began in March 2006; Module 4 will be held in November 2007.
- Brenda Weinberg and Bea Donald have provided Sandplay training for an enthusiastic group in Korea.
- One of our teaching members will be making a presentation on Sandplay Therapy at the National Association of Drama Therapy conference in Montreal, August 2007.
Also. There were a number of presentations by our members at the 2nd International Come to Your Senses Conference held in Toronto in May.
The goal for 2007-2008 is to continue sponsoring seminars and conferences for our members in locations such as Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and the Ottawa/Kingston area.

DGST Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sandspieltherapiewww.sandspiel.de
by Ulrike Hinsch

The German society now has 112 members, 20 with certificate, 19 of them as ISST members and 1 with a certificate of the DGST. 13 members are allowed to teach. Since 2006 we have 5 new ISST members and there are also some members almost ready with their final cases. Some members are on the way to retire, so the German society seems to come into a balance between your and older members. The board of DGST is composed of
Linde von Keyserlingk, President
Dr. Heidi Schmid-Reichert, Vice President
Vera von Braunbehrens, 2nd Vice President
Ursula Wachter, Treasurer
Gisela Dorstewitz, Secretary
- Gisela Dorstewitz is not yet an ISST member, the others are.

The last German speaking Symposium was held in Stuttgart (September 2006). More than 80 participants from Germany and Switzerland heard and discussed impressive lectures, seminars, and workshops about “The Richness of Pictures and Images”. A benefit auction of figures for the Southafrican project “Shongolollo” was held and a great success for both sides, the Sandplay therapist who runs the project there and the German society too.

This fall (6th of October 2007) there will be the next general assembly of DGST in Stuttgart with a lecture of Catherine de Dardel from Switzerland about: “Die wiedergewonnene Weiblichkeit” (The recovered feminine).
The next Symposium on Sandplay Therapy will be organized by the Swiss Society of Sandplay Therapy (SGSST) and take place in Boldern near Zürich at the end of the next year (31st of October till 2nd of November 2008) “Sandspiel in Berührung mit anderen Kulturen” Sandplay in touch with other cultures).

The research study of Sandplay Therapy is successfully completed and the results have been published during the symposium in Stuttgart last year and in international journals of psychiatry and psychotherapy. A German handbook of Sandplay Therapy “Theorie und Praxis der Sandspieltherapie” was published by Alexander von Gontard, who is a psychiatrist for children and adolescents, pediatrician and psychotherapist and director of the university hospital in Homburg, Saar.

The “Sandspielzeitung” under the edition of Linde von Keyserlingk is a very good instrument of communication between the sandplayers and has now 350 subscribers and some readers of special interest.

Training of Sandplay is offered in several places all over the country by individual teachers, regional groups and teachers associated with C.G.Jung institutes and societies. Groups exist in Stuttgart, Tübingen, München, Berlin, Köln. Group and individual training is new in Dresden. Successful “Days of Sandplay” were held in Köln (on “Puberty and Adolescence”) and Stuttgart (on “Death and Dying as it is shown in sandtrays”.) These days, usually on Saturdays, give a good opportunity for sandplayers of a special region to meet each other and discuss their work and progress. Supervision groups exist in many places, and of course individual supervision and possibilities to have a personal process with a certified member are given as well.

The cooperation with the Dutch Sandplay Therapists is ongoing and developing and of great value for both sides. 2 new ISST members and some more almost ready for certification show this fruitful communication. Also Sandplay therapists from Belgium and France visit the meetings in the Northwest and there is a cooperation with Swiss colleagues in the Southwest for the tradition of Sandplay Therapy to be continued with the junior members.

Our website www.sandspiel.de offers informations about Sandplay in general, lists of therapists (in order of locations), training possibilities (courses, personal and group supervision, personal process), meetings and congresses, a forum for insider and links to other societies.

JAST
JAST Japanese Association for Sandplay Therapists
By Prof. Kazuhiko Higuchi San, translated into English by Takuji Natori San

The saddest shock of this year was that we have lost two magnificent members: Prof. Takao Oda and Prof. Hayao Kawai. This loss has been extraordinarily painful and damaging to our society. However, we believe we should endure this deep sorrow and continue to enrich our activity of JAST toward fruitful future. In order to realize it, we are promoting the procedure to accept new members, two have already been registered, and two are now under the procedure.
JAST has now more than 1,900 members. In contrast, there are only 8 Japanese members in ISST. This might be partly because Japanese people are usually not good at speaking in English, and partly because, I think this is one of our disadvantages. Japanese people usually have hesitation in keeping company with foreign people. I believe we would make efforts to overcome both weak points.

In 2006, we invited Ruth Ammann, the president of ISST, to the 20th annual congress of JAST in Kyoto. The theme of the congress was “Architecture and Sandplay Therapy”. We had quite meaningful discussions about how Japanese tradition of sandtray and gardening have effected sandplay therapy in Japan. It was really our pleasure to have an attendance of the ISST president and to show her directly how we organize our congress. We designed to have both lectures for large groups and workshops for small groups. As to the latter, we had many workshops of case conference with selected guest discussants, using plenty of time. This style of workshop has been used in Japan as a unique and fruitful method for clinical case study. In total we had 700 Japanese attendants and 40 guest attendants from Korea. We will have the 21st annual congress 2007 in Nagasaki, around 500 attendants are expected to join. The annual meeting of ISST Japan branch will be also held during the Nagasaki congress.

SGSST Swiss Society of Sandplay Therapy

Membership
The membership of the Swiss Society of Sandplay Therapy consists of 13 members (one member had to suspend active membership because of health reasons).

Training Candidates
We have a group  of 16 persons who at various stages of our history have been admitted to our training.

Fachtagung/Meeting for a professional exchange
In the month of February 2007 members and training candidates met for professional exchange, a meeting in addition to the ordinary membership meeting in order to further contact among the Swiss Sandplay group.
This years meeting took place in the French part of Switzerland and included a case presentation on a case of treatment of a mentally retarded person with Sandplay and supervision of a case by a candidate for membership.

Reorganisation of training
In our membership meeting June 07 we accepted a proposition by our training committee to offer training in Sandplay in a stable group beginning March 08. The training consisted of a total of 8 blocks of three days of teaching. These teachings include 7 areas of theory and case study as well as elements of supervision. In this way within two years there is the possibility to accumulate 92 hours of basis-seminars and 40 hours of supervision, i.e. to accumulate a good portion of the requirements needed for membership. The rest would be accumulated in individual seminars and individual supervision.
In the French part of Switzerland the training continues in the usual mode of offering courses on Saturdays and is very successful in cooperation with the training program of the Charles Baudouin Institute.

Swiss/German joint congress in 2008
The Swiss Society will host the next joint Swiss/German congress (11. Sandspielsymposium, 31.10.-2.11.208) entitled: “Sandspiel in Berührung mit anderen Kulturen” (Sandplay and other Cultures) in Boldern at the Zurich lake.

End of the meeting: 6 p.m.                                               Recording secretary: Yvonne Trueb
